Why your computer is slow, and what actually fixes it

A computer that has got slower is almost always hitting one of four limits. Storage that is full or mechanical, memory that has run out so the machine is swapping to disk, too much software starting with the system, or heat that forces the processor to slow itself down. Each one has a different fix, and the fix for one does nothing at all for the other three.

That is why most advice on this question fails. It prescribes a remedy without naming the illness.

The expensive version of that mistake is buying memory for a disk-bound machine. It is one of the most common upgrades people make, and on a computer still running a mechanical hard drive it is close to the least effective thing you can spend money on. The machine was never short of memory. It was waiting on the disk.

So the useful order is diagnosis first, then a fix chosen to match. The diagnosis takes about a minute and needs nothing you do not already have.

Find the bottleneck before you change anything#

Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager, then look at the Performance tab. You are not looking for a number to compare against anyone else's. You are looking for which of the four resources is pinned while the machine feels slow.

Do this while the computer is actually being slow. A machine sitting idle on the desktop tells you nothing, which is why so many people look at Task Manager, see everything calm, and conclude the problem is imaginary.

  • Disk at or near 100% for long stretches. This is the most common answer by a wide margin, and the most fixable.
  • Memory high, and the machine slows worst when switching between programs. You are swapping.
  • CPU high with nothing obvious running. Something is starting with the system, or a background task is doing work you did not ask for.
  • Everything looks fine, but performance falls off after a few minutes of load. That is heat.

Bottleneck one: the disk#

If the machine still has a mechanical hard drive, a spinning platter with a moving head, this is the answer and nothing else will come close. Every other component spends its time waiting. Moving the system to a solid-state drive is the single change that most reliably turns an unusable computer back into a usable one, and it does more than doubling the memory would.

A solid-state drive that is nearly full is the second version of this problem. These drives need free space to work with, and performance falls away as they fill. If the system drive is above roughly 90% full, clearing space is a real fix and not just housekeeping. Windows has Storage Sense built in to do it on a schedule, which is preferable to installing anything for the purpose.

The third version is the one people miss: a healthy drive with something constantly writing to it. Search indexing after a large file move, a backup client, a sync folder pulling down a few thousand files. Task Manager's Processes tab, sorted by Disk, names the culprit in seconds. This is usually temporary and worth waiting out rather than fixing.

Bottleneck two: memory#

When a machine runs out of physical memory it does not stop. It moves the overflow to disk and carries on, much more slowly. That is why memory pressure and disk pressure look so similar from the outside, and why people so often treat one as the other.

The tell is behavioural rather than numerical. A machine short of memory is fine inside one program and stutters when you switch between them, or when you return to a browser tab you left an hour ago and it visibly reloads. A machine short of disk speed is slow at everything, including starting up.

Adding memory is the right call when that switching stutter is the complaint and the drive is already solid state. On a mechanical drive, fix the drive first and then see whether you still have a memory problem. Often you will not.

Bottleneck three: what starts with the machine#

Microsoft's own list of causes for a slow PC names startup apps running in the background first, and it is first for a reason. Software that installs itself into startup rarely announces it, and the effect accumulates over years rather than arriving all at once, so there is no moment where the machine noticeably got worse.

Task Manager's Startup apps tab lists them with an impact rating. The rule for using it is simple: disable anything you do not recognise starting automatically, because nothing there is required for the computer to boot. You are not deleting the program. You are declining to have it run before you have asked for it.

Updaters are the usual offenders. A handful of separate programs each running their own background checker is a meaningful load on an older machine, and every one of them can be started on demand instead.

Bottleneck four: heat#

A processor that gets too hot slows itself down on purpose to avoid damage. This is by design and it is not a fault, but on a machine with several years of dust in the fans it triggers far earlier than it should.

The signature is distinctive and worth learning, because it is the one bottleneck that looks like nothing at all in a screenshot. Performance is normal for the first few minutes and then falls off, the fans get loud, and the underside of a laptop is hot. Restart it and you get another few good minutes.

On a desktop this is usually dust and is genuinely fixable with compressed air. On a thin laptop it is often the design, and the honest answer is that you can improve it but not solve it. Raising the machine so air can reach the underside vents does more than most of what gets sold for the purpose.

The one nobody says: it may not be the computer#

A large share of complaints about a slow computer are complaints about a browser. Thirty or forty open tabs, several extensions, and a couple of web applications that were desktop programs a decade ago will bring a perfectly healthy machine to its knees, and none of it shows up as a hardware problem because it is not one.

The test takes a minute. Close the browser completely and use the machine for something else. If it is suddenly fine, you have found it, and no upgrade was going to help.

The Windows 10 wrinkle#

There is a second question hiding inside this one, and for a lot of people it is the more urgent of the two: the machine may be running fine and still be a problem.

Windows 10 reached the end of support on 14 October 2025. Microsoft is explicit that computers running it still function; what stopped is the security updates. The consumer Extended Security Updates programme carries protection to 12 October 2027 for those who enrol, which is a real extension and also a deadline rather than a solution.

It is worth being precise about the software side, because this is where the scare stories are loosest. Microsoft 365 Apps on Windows 10 did not stop working, and they did not stop being patched. Microsoft is continuing security updates for Microsoft 365 on Windows 10 for three years past the cutoff, until 10 October 2028, while recommending an upgrade in the meantime. If you have been told your Office will break, that is not what the maker says.

Where support genuinely has gone is the one-off purchased versions. Office 2016 and 2019 are out of support on every operating system. Office 2021 and Office 2024 keep running on Windows 10 but no longer receive support there, while the same versions stay supported on Windows 11. That is the pattern worth internalising: the forcing function is rarely an attack and rarely a dramatic failure. It is a slow narrowing of what is still covered, and you usually notice it only when you go looking.

Worth separating clearly, because they get conflated constantly: an unsupported computer is not a slow computer. A machine can be fast and unsupported, or supported and unusable. They are different problems with different answers, and the four bottlenecks above are unaffected by which side of the support line you are on.

What not to buy#

No cleaner, optimiser or registry tool belongs on the list. The useful things they claim to do are already in Windows and free, the rest is theatre, and the category has a long history of being the cause of the problem it offers to solve.

Defragmenting is not a fix for a solid-state drive and Windows already handles it correctly for mechanical ones on a schedule. It has not been a manual task for a long time.

And a new computer is a real answer that is very often the wrong first one. A drive swap and a startup clear-out on a five-year-old machine costs a fraction of a replacement, and the honest test is whether the four checks above point at something you can address. If the answer is a mechanical hard drive and eight gigabytes of memory, you have a machine worth fixing. If it is a processor from a decade ago running everything at once, you have a machine worth replacing, and now you know why rather than guessing.
