The case for boring software

The tools that last are rarely the exciting ones. A short argument for choosing the dull option on purpose.

Boring is a feature#

  • It has been debugged by everyone before you.
  • Its failure modes are documented.
  • You can hire people who already know it.

When to be interesting#

Novelty earns its place only where it's your actual advantage. Everywhere else, spend your risk budget elsewhere.

Choose boring tools for the problems that aren't your product, so you can be bold on the one that is.
